Botulism Risk in Some Canned Green Beans

Aug. 3, 2007 — The FDA today warned individuals not to eat certain brands of French cut green beans in 14.5-ounce cans made by Lakeside Foods because the product may not have been prepared satisfactorily to dispense with the potential for botulism poison.

In a news discharge, the FDA states that the canned green beans may cause botulism on the off chance that expended. However, as of Aug. 1, 2007, the FDA hadn’t gotten reports of sicknesses related to the product and Lakeside Foods reports no signs of botulism in any of the cans it had tried.

The botulism poison is very strong, and botulism is a life-threatening illness. Indications of botulism can start from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin.

Botulism side effects may include twofold vision, obscured vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, trouble swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle shortcoming that moves dynamically down the body, affecting the shoulders to begin with then plummeting to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, and calves. Botulism moreover may paralyze the breathing muscles, which can result in passing unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided.

The FDA exhorts people who show these symptoms and who may have recently eaten the item to seek immediate therapeutic consideration.

Lakeside Nourishments is based in Manitowoc, Wis. The affected Lakeside French cut green beans are sold across the country and in Canada beneath the taking after labels: Albertson’s, Upbeat Harvest, Best Choice, Nourishment Club, Bogopa, Valu Time, Hill Nation Passage, HEB, Laura Lynn, Kroger, No Title, North Pride, Shop N Save, Shoppers Valu, Schnucks, Whelp Nourishments, Dierbergs, Flavorite, IGA, Best Choice, and Thrifty Maid.

The specific codes (top line of can code) included are: EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA5267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECB5217, ECB5227, and ECB5307.

The FDA advises people who have any of these items — or any nourishments made with these items — to dispose of them quickly. If the code on an influenced can is lost or unreadable, shoppers should toss the product out, says the FDA. Lakeside Foods is intentionally recalling all of the potentially sullied items. In a news release, the company states that it found the preparing mistake amid routine observing and has rectified the issue. Lakeside Foods, though it hasn’t found botulism poison in any of the cans that it has tried, is proceeding testing “out of an abundance of caution.”

The recall doesn’t apply to any other Lakeside Nourishment products or to any other brands of canned green beans.

Lakeside Foods suggests that shoppers with any questions or concerns around the recall should call the company at (800) 466-3834 ext. 4090.
