Ionizing Air Cleaners May Pose Health Hazard

April 4, 2005 — Some prevalent ionizing discuss cleaners may be hazardous to your wellbeing, particularly on the off chance that you have got asthma or allergies, says a product testing gather.

An examination by Shoppers Union (CU) — the items testing gather that publishes Shopper Reports — found that five of the best-selling models tested emitted generally high levels of ozone.

Ozone exposure can aggravate sensitivities Ozone exposure can disturb allergies and decrease lung function. It may be a hurtful gas resulting from car exhaust, gasoline vapors, and other toxins.

“It is both deceiving and untrustworthy for an organization like Shopper Reports to recommend that there is any potential harmful effect from a product that tens of thousands of individuals have obtained and are using each day without antagonistic consequences,” Sharper Picture spokesman and common guide E. Weave Wallach tells WebMD.

A later consider appeared that short-term increments in ozone levels in the outside discuss contribute to thousands of deaths a year in the United States.

Ongoing Quarrel

In an October 2003 report, CU researchers concluded that ionizing purifiers do a much poorer work of cleaning the air of clean and smoke than their advertising proposes. The report led to a lawsuit against the customer group by Sharper Picture Corp., which makes the top-selling ionizing air purifiers — the Ionic Breeze line.

The suit was dismissed in November of last year, and Sharper Image has since concurred to pay just over half a million dollars in court costs.

While acknowledging that the new ozone tests did not appear that the discuss cleaners pose a clear health hazard, Shoppers Union bad habit president and spokesman Jeff Asher says they did recommend a potential chance. None of the ionizing discuss purifiers tested surpassed a for the most part accepted ozone safety level when the discuss was measured 3 feet away.

“The bottom line is that these products do not work besides, so why would anyone need to uncover themselves to a level of ozone which, when added to the ozone that is already in the domestic, certainly isn’t planning to do them any great?” Asher tells WebMD.

Wallach added that the Ionic Breeze model used within the most recent test has been shown to comply with federal directions for safe ozone emissions.

CU’s latest examination included Sharper Image’s Professional Arrangement Ionic Breeze Quadra S1737 SNX, and four other top-selling brands of ionizing discuss cleaners: Brookstone’s Pure-Ion V2; Ionic Pro CL-369; IonizAir P4620; and Encompass Air XJ-2000.

The discoveries are distributed within the May issue of Shopper Reports.

All five of the ionizers failed CR recommendations, with in general failed scores based on the discuss cleaner’s ability to evacuate fine tidy, smoke, and pollen from a test chamber. They also fizzled the standard sealed-room testing for ozone levels by creating more than 50 parts per billion (ppb) of ozone detected inside 2 inches away from the machine over a 24-hour period.

They all fared better, however, when the tests more closely imitated conditions in a normal home. In tests measuring ozone levels 3 feet absent from the machine in a well-ventilated room, the Brookstone cleaner Pure-Ion V2 transmitted the least ozone at 2 ppb and the IonizAir P4620 show emitted the most, at 28 ppb, agreeing to Asher.

“Fifty ppb is the accepted cutoff level for security, and clearly the most noticeably awful (ozone emitter) tried produced just over half of that,” he says. “So, one might conclude that there’s no threat with these machines. Whereas for most individuals that’s probably genuine, some individuals do appear to be especially helpless to ozone.”
